Thutmose III Takes Throne

Egypt's greatest warrior waits in the wings

In the gilded palaces along the Nile, the young Thutmose III ascended to the throne of Egypt -- though real power immediately shifted to his stepmother, the formidable Hatshepsut. For two decades he waited in her shadow, but once he finally ruled alone, he became Egypt's greatest warrior pharaoh. Seventeen military campaigns expanded the empire to its widest extent, earning him comparisons to Napoleon. Historians now regard him as one of the most brilliant military commanders of all time.

Falange's Founder Was Born

Spain's darkest political chapter takes root

In Madrid, Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera was born into political aristocracy -- his father had been the dictator of Spain. The younger Primo de Rivera would found the Falange Espanola, a fascist political movement that sought to reshape Spain through national syndicalism. Executed by Republican forces at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, he became a martyr figure for Franco's regime, his legacy forever entangled with Spain's most painful century.
