Emperor Otho Was Born
A ruler born for tragedy and a brief reign
In the Italian town of Ferentium, Marcus Salvius Otho was born -- a man whose life would read like a Roman tragedy. Once a close friend of Emperor Nero, he was exiled when Nero stole his wife Poppaea. In the chaos following Nero's death, Otho seized the throne but held it for only ninety-one days before defeat at the Battle of Bedriacum. Rather than prolong civil war, he took his own life -- an act of courage that even his enemies admired.
