Eraclus became the twenty-fifth bishop of Liege, assuming spiritual authority over one of the most important dioceses in the medieval Low Countries. His appointment during the turbulent tenth century placed him at the intersection of religious devotion and political power, as bishops served not only as spiritual leaders but as feudal lords wielding considerable secular authority.

The Thomasites Arrive

Six hundred teachers cross an ocean to educate

Six hundred American school teachers, known as the Thomasites after the USAT Thomas that carried them, arrived in Manila to establish a public education system in the newly occupied Philippines. The 346 men and 180 women, representing forty-three states, began the ambitious project of bringing American-style education to a nation of seven million people.
