Medina's defenders fall before the Umayyads

Umayyad forces clashed with the rebel defenders of Medina at a lava field northeast of the holy city during the Second Fitna. The Battle of al-Harra ended in an Umayyad victory that led to the sacking of Medina, the city of the Prophet Muhammad, sending shockwaves through the Islamic world and becoming one of the most controversial episodes in early Islamic history.

Margaret Utinsky Was Born

A nurse who defied an empire to save lives

Margaret Utinsky was born in Louisiana and would become one of the most courageous figures of World War II in the Pacific. Working with the Filipino resistance, she smuggled medicine, food, and supplies to Allied prisoners of war in the Philippines under Japanese occupation. Her bravery earned her the Medal of Freedom in 1946.
