The destroyer of Jerusalem, beloved by Rome

In Rome, Titus Flavius Vespasianus was born, the eldest son of the future Emperor Vespasian. He would command the Roman legions that besieged and destroyed Jerusalem in 70 AD, an act commemorated on the Arch of Titus. Yet as emperor, he was renowned for generosity and compassion, responding heroically to the eruption of Vesuvius. His premature death at forty-one left Rome mourning.
