Cicero Is Assassinated

The republic's voice is silenced forever

On a road near his seaside villa at Formiae, Marcus Tullius Cicero was overtaken by soldiers sent to execute him. Proscribed as an enemy of the state by Mark Antony, Rome's greatest orator extended his neck from his litter and met death with stoic dignity. His head and hands were displayed in the Forum, a gruesome warning that the Roman Republic was truly dead.

She saw the souls of flowers

In a village in the Poltava region of Ukraine, Kateryna Bilokur was born into peasant life. Despite receiving no formal training, she became one of Ukraine's most celebrated folk artists, painting flowers in oil on canvas with a transcendent beauty that moved critics to declare she could see the souls of flowers. Her art elevated Ukrainian folk tradition to fine art.

World War II

World War II: Attack on Pearl Harbor: The Imperial Japanese Navy carries out a surprise attack on the United States.

World War II or the Second World War was a global conflict between two coalitions: the Allies and the Axis powers. Nearly all of the world's countries participated. Tanks and aircraft played major roles, the latter enabling the strategic bombing of cities and delivery of the only nuclear weapons used in war. World War II was the deadliest conflict in history, causing the death of 60 to 75 million people.
