Trajan Declared in Cologne
A new emperor proclaimed on the Rhine
In the city of Cologne, the seat of his government in lower Germany, Trajan received word of Emperor Nerva's death and was formally declared Roman emperor. Unlike many of his predecessors, Trajan did not rush to Rome to claim his throne. Instead, he spent months securing the northern frontier, demonstrating the steady confidence and military discipline that would define his reign as one of Rome's greatest.
