Miracle of the Rain

A thunderstorm saves Marcus Aurelius

In the forests of Moravia, the Roman army of Emperor Marcus Aurelius found itself surrounded by the Quadi, a Germanic tribe that had broken its peace treaty. With his legions exhausted and desperate for water, a sudden violent thunderstorm broke over the battlefield -- rain that refreshed the Romans while lightning struck the enemy lines. The 'Miracle of the Rain' became one of the most celebrated episodes of Marcus Aurelius's reign, depicted on his column in Rome and claimed by both pagans and Christians as divine intervention.

Cook Islands Join New Zealand

Pacific paradise becomes a colonial appendage

The boundaries of the Colony of New Zealand were officially extended by the United Kingdom to include the Cook Islands, bringing the remote Polynesian archipelago under New Zealand's administration. The annexation, part of the broader British strategy to control the Pacific, transformed the islands from independent Polynesian communities into colonial subjects. The Cook Islands would eventually achieve self-governance in free association with New Zealand, but the effects of colonization continue to shape their identity.
