Battle of Vezeronce

The Burgundians halt Frankish expansion

In the Alpine foothills of southeastern Gaul, Burgundian forces defeated the invading Frankish army at the Battle of Vezeronce, checking Frankish expansion and preserving Burgundian independence for another decade. The battle was one of the last great victories of the Burgundian kingdom before it was finally absorbed into the Frankish realm. The clash demonstrated that even in an age of Frankish dominance, the smaller Germanic kingdoms could still fight back and win.

Dunhuang Manuscripts Found

A sealed cave yields ancient treasures

In the Mogao Caves near Dunhuang on the ancient Silk Road, Taoist monk Wang Yuanlu discovered a sealed chamber containing thousands of ancient manuscripts and printed documents dating from the fifth to eleventh centuries. The cache, one of the most important archaeological finds in history, included the oldest known dated printed book -- the Diamond Sutra of 868 AD. The manuscripts illuminated the religious, cultural, and commercial life of medieval Central Asia with unprecedented detail.

World War II: U.

World War II or the Second World War was a global conflict between two coalitions: the Allies and the Axis powers. Nearly all of the world's countries participated. Tanks and aircraft played major roles, the latter enabling the strategic bombing of cities and delivery of the only nuclear weapons used in war. World War II was the deadliest conflict in history, causing the death of 60 to 75 million people.
