Consul Celebrates Victory

Rome marks forty years of peace with Veii

Roman consul Aulus Manlius Vulso celebrated an ovation, a lesser form of triumph, for concluding the war against the Etruscan city of Veii and securing a forty-year truce. The peace with Veii gave the young Roman Republic breathing room to consolidate its power in central Italy. This early diplomatic success demonstrated that Rome could achieve its aims through negotiation as well as warfare, a balance that would serve the republic for centuries.
