Shahnameh Completed

Persia's epic poem reaches its final verse

The poet Ferdowsi completed the Shahnameh, the Book of Kings, an epic poem of over fifty thousand couplets that chronicles the mythological and historical past of the Persian world from creation to the Islamic conquest. Thirty years in the writing, the Shahnameh preserved the Persian language and identity at a time when both were under threat from Arabization. It remains the longest poem ever written by a single author and the crown jewel of Persian literature.
