Emperor Dezong Was Born

A reformer tested by rebellion and ruin

In the Tang dynasty heartland, Li Kuo was born -- the prince who would become Emperor Dezong and reign for twenty-six years, the third longest in Tang history. He began as a reformer, introducing new tax laws and attempting to crush powerful regional warlords. But his military campaigns backfired spectacularly, triggering rebellions that nearly toppled the dynasty. The chastened emperor spent his later years governing cautiously, having learned the hard way that ambition must be tempered by wisdom.

Belarusian Poet Born

A voice that would not be silenced

In Belarus, Uladzimir Zhylka was born -- a poet whose lyrical voice would help define Belarusian literary culture in its most fragile years. Writing in a language that was constantly under pressure from Russian dominance, Zhylka crafted verses that celebrated Belarusian identity, landscape, and spirit. His death in 1933 at just thirty-three robbed Belarusian literature of one of its most promising voices during an era when cultural expression was increasingly dangerous.

World War II

World War II: In the Le Paradis massacre, 99 soldiers from a Royal Norfolk Regiment unit are shot after surrendering to German troops; two survive.

World War II or the Second World War was a global conflict between two coalitions: the Allies and the Axis powers. Nearly all of the world's countries participated. Tanks and aircraft played major roles, the latter enabling the strategic bombing of cities and delivery of the only nuclear weapons used in war. World War II was the deadliest conflict in history, causing the death of 60 to 75 million people.
