Rome splits its loyalty between rival basilicas
Following the death of Pope Anastasius II, the Roman clergy split into two factions. Symmachus was elected pope in the Lateran Palace while Laurentius was simultaneously elected in Santa Maria Maggiore. The resulting Laurentian schism tore the Roman church apart, a crisis that would require years and imperial intervention to resolve, revealing deep theological and political fractures.
