Bulgaria Rises Again

A saint's feast day becomes liberation day

On the feast of St. Demetrius of Thessaloniki, the brothers Asen and Peter rallied Bulgarians and Vlachs in a fierce uprising against Byzantine rule. The revolt, sparked by crushing new taxes, erupted in Moesia and swept across the Balkans. Its triumph created the Second Bulgarian Empire, restoring Bulgarian sovereignty after more than a century of Byzantine domination.
