Heraclius Seizes Byzantium

A tyrant falls, an emperor rises

Arriving by ship from North Africa, the general Heraclius stormed Constantinople and personally slew the despised Emperor Phocas, whose brutal reign had brought the Byzantine Empire to its knees. With Phocas dead, Heraclius claimed the purple and began one of the longest and most consequential reigns in Byzantine history, including the epic wars against Sasanian Persia.
