Caesar's rival enters the world

Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus was born into a prominent Roman family and would rise to become one of the Republic's greatest military commanders. Known as Pompey the Great, he conquered vast territories and formed the First Triumvirate with Caesar and Crassus. His tragic end, murdered on an Egyptian beach after losing to Caesar, marked the death of the Republic itself.

Lanza del Vasto Was Born

Italy's apostle of nonviolent resistance

In San Vito dei Normanni, southern Italy, Lanza del Vasto was born into a noble family. He would become a poet, philosopher, and one of Europe's most dedicated practitioners of nonviolent activism, inspired by time spent with Mahatma Gandhi in India. His founding of the Community of the Ark brought Gandhian principles to European soil.
