Louis the Stammerer was crowned king of West Francia by Pope John VIII, inheriting the throne left by his father, Emperor Charles the Bald. Physically weak and politically overshadowed, Louis would outlive his father by only a year and a half. His brief reign underscored the fragility of Carolingian power as the once-mighty dynasty struggled to hold together.
