Deep in the forests of Germania, an alliance of Germanic tribes led by Arminius ambushed three Roman legions under Varus. The three-day battle annihilated the XVII, XVIII, and XIX legions, sending shockwaves through Rome. Emperor Augustus, upon learning of the disaster, reportedly cried: 'Varus, give me back my legions!'

Initially celebrated for surrealist writing alongside Christopher Isherwood, Upward later turned to Marxist realism. He was believed to be the UK's oldest living author before his death at 105, his career spanning nearly the entire twentieth century.
