In the refined courts of the Chinese Chen dynasty, the future Emperor Houzhu was born. The last ruler of his line, he would be remembered more for his poetry and love of luxury than for statecraft. When the Sui dynasty conquered the Chen in 589, Houzhu was found hiding in a well with his concubines, a pitiful end to a once-proud southern dynasty.
