Primus Claims Rome for Vespasian
A general seizes the capital for a distant emperor
The general Antonius Primus marched into Rome to claim the imperial title for Vespasian, the commander fighting far away in the east. The entry came during the chaotic Year of the Four Emperors, when Rome cycled through Galba, Otho, and Vitellius before Vespasian's supporters finally secured the capital. The eternal city had endured a year of civil war.
