The first of four emperors in a single year

Near the town of Terracina along the Italian coast, Servius Sulpicius Galba was born into an ancient patrician family. He would become the first emperor in the catastrophic Year of the Four Emperors, seizing power after Nero's suicide. But his reign lasted only seven months before he was murdered by the Praetorian Guard, the first casualty of Rome's most chaotic year.
