Emperor Hadrian Dies

A restless wanderer finds his final rest

At his seaside villa in Baiae on the Bay of Naples, Emperor Hadrian succumbed to heart failure. The ruler who had walked every corner of his vast empire, who built walls in Britain and temples in Rome, was laid to rest beside his wife Vibia Sabina in the massive cylindrical tomb he had constructed on the banks of the Tiber, a monument that still dominates the Roman skyline today.
