Constantine's Danube Bridge
Stone and ambition spanning a mighty river
The Roman architect Theophilus Patricius completed a monumental bridge over the Danube connecting Sucidava in modern Romania to Oescus in modern Bulgaria. Commissioned by Emperor Constantine, it served as a strategic lifeline for the reconquest of Dacia. For four decades, this engineering marvel facilitated troop movements and trade across one of the empire's most vital frontiers.
