Battle of Mantinea
Victory won, but the victor falls
On the plains of the Peloponnese, the Theban army led by the brilliant general Epaminondas clashed with a Spartan-led coalition at Mantinea. Though the Thebans won a tactical victory, Epaminondas himself fell in battle, and with him died Theban supremacy over Greece. Neither side could claim dominion, and the Greek world spiraled into fragmentation that would invite Macedonian conquest.
