Alfonso X Proclaimed King

Castile crowns its wisest ruler

In the great cathedral of Seville, Alfonso X was proclaimed King of Castile, Leon, and Galicia, beginning a reign that would earn him the epithet 'the Wise.' A brilliant polymath, he commissioned the translation of Arabic scientific texts into Latin, reformed the Castilian legal code, and produced a monumental history of the world. His court became a beacon of learning where Christians, Muslims, and Jews collaborated in one of the medieval world's greatest intellectual enterprises.

Hap Day Was Born

A Maple Leaf for life

In Owen Sound, Ontario, Clarence Henry Day was born -- the hockey man who would spend twenty-eight years serving the Toronto Maple Leafs in virtually every capacity. As a player, he captained the team; as a coach, he won five Stanley Cups; as an executive, he shaped the franchise's identity. Known as 'Hap' for his cheerful disposition, Day was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1961, recognized as one of the most influential figures in Canadian hockey history.
