Emperor Cao Mao Killed

A puppet emperor's last desperate gamble

In the Wei capital of Luoyang, the young Emperor Cao Mao made a desperate attempt to overthrow his regent Sima Zhao, who had reduced the emperor to a mere figurehead. Leading a ragtag force of palace guards and servants, Cao Mao charged out of the palace gates -- only to be cut down by Sima Zhao's soldiers. The emperor's death, far from weakening the Sima clan, actually strengthened their grip on power and hastened the fall of the Wei dynasty during the Three Kingdoms period.

Johnny Weissmuller Was Born

The swimmer who became Tarzan

In Timisoara, Hungary (now Romania), Janos Peter Weissmuller was born -- the swimmer who would dominate Olympic competition and then conquer Hollywood. Winning five gold medals across the 1924 and 1928 Olympics, he was the fastest swimmer alive before trading the pool for the jungle as cinema's most iconic Tarzan. His famous yell echoed through twelve films and became one of the most recognizable sounds in movie history, proving that greatness can take many forms.
