Pope Marcellinus Begins

A papacy overshadowed by persecution

Marcellinus began his papacy as the twenty-ninth Bishop of Rome, inheriting the leadership of the Christian community during a period of relative peace that would soon give way to the most severe persecution in church history. His pontificate, lasting eight years, would end during the Diocletianic Persecution that began in 303 AD. The exact circumstances of his death remain debated by historians, but later accounts suggest he may have briefly apostasized before dying as a penitent.

Hoboken Pier Inferno

Fire devours three steamships in the harbor

A savage fire erupted at the piers in Hoboken, New Jersey, engulfing three docked steamships of the North German Lloyd line and spreading to the waterfront warehouses. Over two hundred crew members, passengers, and dock workers perished in the conflagration as flames raced through the wooden piers and the ships' interiors. The Hoboken pier fire was one of the deadliest maritime disasters in New York harbor's history and led to sweeping reforms in fire safety regulations for port facilities.
