A Shadow Emperor Crowned

Ricimer pulls the strings from behind the throne

Libius Severus was declared emperor of the Western Roman Empire, but real power remained firmly in the hands of the magister militum Ricimer. Anna Seghers Born

War's moral weight captured in exile's ink

In Mainz, Germany, Netty Reiling was born into a Jewish family. Writing under the pen name Anna Seghers, she would become one of Germany's most important novelists, exploring the moral experience of World War II with unflinching honesty. Fleeing Nazi persecution, she found refuge in Mexico before returning to East Germany, where her works became cornerstones of anti-fascist literature.
