Emperor Maximinus II Born

The last pharaoh and persecutor of Christians

In the rugged countryside of the Danube provinces, the future Emperor Maximinus Daza was born. Rising through the military ranks under his uncle Galerius, he would claim the title of Augustus and become the last Roman emperor to persecute Christians systematically and the last person to hold the ancient title of Pharaoh of Egypt, a figure straddling two dying worlds.

Sarah Bernhardt Returns to NYC

The divine Sarah enchants America once more

At the Savoy Hotel in New York, the legendary French actress Sarah Bernhardt received the press at the outset of her first American visit since 1896. With a troupe of over fifty performers, she announced plans to tour the country and to play the title role in Hamlet. Hugo had praised her golden voice, and Rostand called her the queen of the pose. America was ready to be enchanted again.
