The Poet Lucan Born
Rome's fiery bard of civil war
In Cordoba, Roman Spain, Marcus Annaeus Lucanus was born into a family of literary distinction, the nephew of the philosopher Seneca. He would become one of Rome's most gifted poets, composing Pharsalia, an epic poem about the civil war between Caesar and Pompey. His brilliance and his entanglement in a conspiracy against Nero led to his forced suicide at just twenty-five.
