Constantinople Riots

A city erupts over theological tyranny

The streets of Constantinople exploded in violence as citizens rioted against Emperor Anastasius I's attempts to impose Monophysite changes to Christian liturgy and his depositions of Chalcedonian patriarchs. A furious mob surged through the capital, attempting to proclaim the general Areobindus as a rival emperor. The riots exposed the explosive power of religious controversy in Byzantine politics.

Lucretiu Patrascanu Born

A communist who dared to disagree

In Bacau, Romania, Lucretiu Patrascanu was born into the intellectual ferment of early twentieth-century Eastern Europe. He would become a leading Romanian communist politician, lawyer, and sociologist, but his independent thinking brought him into fatal conflict with the Stalinist establishment. Arrested, imprisoned, and ultimately executed in 1954, he became a martyr of conscience.
