Ten months of reign, a lifetime of what-ifs

After a reign of just ten months, the child Emperor Leo II of the Eastern Roman Empire died under circumstances that remain debated by historians. His father Zeno, who had been elevated as co-emperor, became sole ruler of the Byzantine Empire. The transition marked the beginning of Zeno's turbulent but consequential reign over the eastern half of the Roman world.
