The monk who would found a Japanese school

In the province of Omi, Japan, the Buddhist monk Saicho was born. He would found the Tendai school of Buddhism on Mount Hiei near Kyoto, one of the most influential religious institutions in Japanese history. His monastery became a center of learning that shaped Japanese Buddhism for centuries, producing the founders of nearly every major school that followed.

Donald Bailey Was Born

The engineer whose bridge won a world war

In Rotherham, Yorkshire, Donald Bailey was born with an engineering mind that would help win World War II. He invented the Bailey bridge, a portable, pre-fabricated truss bridge that could be rapidly assembled under battlefield conditions. Field Marshal Montgomery declared that without it, 'we should not have won the war.' The design remains in use worldwide.
