Augustus Caesar Was Born

The boy who would build an empire

In Rome, Gaius Octavius was born into an equestrian family of modest ambition. Adopted by Julius Caesar, the boy who would become Augustus transformed the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire, initiating the Pax Romana. His political genius, patience, and ruthless pragmatism made him arguably the most consequential leader in Western history.

Bill Stone Was Born

One of the last links to the Great War

William Frederick Stone was born in Devon, England, and lived long enough to become one of the last surviving World War I veterans in the UK's armed forces. Though still in training when the Great War ended, he saw action in World War II. His extraordinary longevity, reaching 108 years, made him a living bridge between the century's defining conflicts.

Korean War

Korean War: The Battle of Hill 282 is the first US friendly-fire incident on British military personnel since World War II.

The Korean War was an armed conflict on the Korean peninsula between North Korea and South Korea and their allies. North Korea was supported by China and the Soviet Union, while South Korea was supported by the United Nations Command (UNC) led by the United States. The war, which ended in stalemate, was the first great clash of arms of the Cold War and was one of, if not its deadliest proxy war.
